In the heart of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the Tahoe Truckee School of Music (TTSM) has been quietly transforming lives since 2009 by addressing a critical need in its diverse community of 60,000 residents. While the Truckee-Tahoe region attracts visitors worldwide for its natural beauty, many local families face economic hardships that limit access to arts education, with 61% of students at Truckee Elementary School participating in free or reduced lunch programs. The school also serves a diverse community, with 57% of students identifying as Hispanic. TTSM’s ambitious 18-month Community Engagement Music Initiative directly tackles disparity in access through 70 free community events, educational workshops reaching 2,200 students across 11 local schools, and cultural celebrations that honor the region’s rich Hispanic and Native American musical traditions.
