Middle-Mile Broadband Initiative

Horizontal Directional Drilling | Alpine, El Dorado & Place Counties, California

Teichert's Energy & Utilities Group is helping close the digital divide through the Middle-Mile Broadband Initiative—holding the largest contract share of the program, covering 1,800 miles of a 10,000-mile statewide fiber network. In July 2021, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law Senate Bill 156 to create an open-access middle-mile network to bring equitable high-speed broadband service to all Californians by building the necessary infrastructure to bring internet connectivity to homes, businesses, and community institutions.

Scope of Work

Our crews are installing approximately 228,000 linear feet of 2" conduit, vaults, and fiber optic cable stretching from Alpine County northbound along the west shore of Lake Tahoe, connecting to a prior network project in Tahoe City. Utilizing rockwheel and chain trencher, horizontal directional drilling, and surface-mounting methods, we're bringing high-speed broadband to unserved communities across California—connecting millions to the education, healthcare, and economic opportunity they depend on. It's the kind of work that defines who we are: building lasting infrastructure that strengthens communities for generations to come.
